網內人Chan Ho Kei’s The Borrowed was one of the most acclaimed international crime novels of recent years a vivid and compelling tale of power corruption and the law spanning five decades of the history of Hong Kong Now he delivers Second Sister an up to the minute tale of a Darwinian digital city where everyone from tech entrepreneurs to teenagers is struggling for the topA schoolgirl Siu Man has committed suicide leaping from her twenty second floor window to the pavement below Siu Man is an orphan and the. I really enjoyed THE BORROWED but didn't like this one uite as much Still it has a solid hook and for readers who enjoy twisty intricate mysteries SECOND SISTER centers on N who is a Sherlock ian character if Sherlock was a hacker I haven't seen many mysteries that use technology as well as this one does With that said the biggest weakness of the book is how much time is spent explaining things to us Our protagonist Nga Yee has hired N to find who drove her sister to suicide An average person would need to have most of N's actions explained but Nga Yee is practically a luddite without even a basic understanding of cell phones so every explanation takes uite some time I got a little tired of these explanations but I understand how they are somewhat necessary in a story with this much tech and manipulation of tech I probably would have warmed to the book if Nga Yee wasn't uite so ignorant and isolated though it's possible we are getting warmed up for a series here with the relationship between the two opposites of N and Nga Yee at its center and that could be interestingThe mystery itself has very satisfying twists and turns with at least a couple reveals that are well earned and impressive Structurally it's hard to complain it's meticulously put together There is a lot here about suicide particularly teen suicide There's also sexual harassmentassault of minors as a major plot point Readers who are not used to the somewhat choppy style of Asian crime fiction in translation may be better off starting with THE BORROWED or DEATH NOTICE or an author like Keigo Higashino who gets a shout out in this book for books that will be a bit accessible for those used to English language crime fiction before moving to this one

Chan Ho-Kei  9 Summary

Ulated by a man harassing girls on mass transit high school kids with their competing agendas and social dramas a Hong Kong digital company courting an American venture capitalist and the Triads market women and noodle shop proprietors who freuent N’s neighborhood of Sai Wan In the end it all comes together to tell us who caused Siu Man’s death and why and to ask in a world where online and offline dialogue has increasingly forgotten about the real people on the other end what the proper punishment i. This was my first time getting to know Asian crime fiction so I really had to get used to the somewhat messy looking style of this book for a while On the other hand I enjoyed books with a chaotic plot or seemingly without a plot at all so when I got into this book and realized it is the way it is and it is meant to be this choppy I soon was hookedI loved the emotional depth of 'Second Sister' It was easy to let myself be taken in by the waves to be angry together with Nga Yee and to feel conflicted as she did further into the story I love how strong her emotions were and how she tried too hard to show her strengthOne thing I did not love is how a smart person like Nga Yee in a world and city where technology is so important was portrayed as totally digitally inept I see how this was used to make her look to the world she would discover with fresh eyes but to me as a reader it made her look not all there Especially at the start when N had to explain the most basic common things to her I hadn't been surprised if he had started explaining what a mouse was to her at some point I think this book would have started strongly if she was just a bit adept like most people are using message boards etc herself and realizing everything that could happen behind them It would also have stopped her having a bit of 'moral high ground' for not using it while most readers of the book probably doThat said I very very much enjoyed 'Second Sister'I received a free copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review

I really really enjoyed reading this book Usually I like my thrillers to be suspenseful and action packed but sometimes it's nice to read one that is slow building intricate and so very introspectiveAt first Second Sister seems like a pretty straightforward story A woman returns home only to find out that her teenage sister has died by suicide She seeks the help of an eccentric seemingly sociopathic skilled detective think Sherlock Holmes in BBC's Sherlock to find out the person that is responsible for driving her sister to her death What ultimately unravels is a masterfully crafted multi layer story of secrets revenge regret and surprise And it is incredibly impactful Most of us can only imagine the pain of losing a loved one to suicide as well as the torture of never knowing what drove them to do it But how many of us are willing to give up every single thing that we have to the one person who can help track down the person that is responsible What if the answers we seek turn out to be something that we cannot handle How cruel can we be to the people who did wrong by us and is it cruel at all if we are only doing this in retaliation I was blown away when I read The Borrowed last year and I remain in awe with his skilful storytelling He knows exactly what to reveal how much to reveal and when he should reveal little things He lures you into thinking that you know everything when really like N he is three steps of you the entire time This is by the way also why his plot twists always work for me I'm never not surprised when he pulls the rug out from beneath me Reading Second Sister also reminds me of the dangers of cyberspace It's easy for people to be hateful and hurtful anonymously but it's also so easy for people who know what they are doing to access and manipulate information for their own agenda whether it be for revenge blackmail or something else disgustingsinister The true horror of the story is not just the hacking the prostitution or the acts of revenge; it is perhaps the knowledge that these things can and do happen even for ordinary run of the mill folks like Nga Yee and her family You know people like you and me But I think at the heart of Second Sister is a story that reveals a lot about the kind of people that we are and the kind that we can be It urges us to be kind to other people to communicate our feelings effectively with the people we love and to not take them for granted In this case maybe it is a story we didn't know we needed Until now I don't think I need to say this but I am really keen to read whatever we get from Chan next It might be a while but I think the wait will be truly worth it Many thanks to the lovely people at Pansing Books for sending me a free copy for review Second Sister is now available in all good bookstores
