En a job as a housekeeper for the Tully family Mavis wants this home to be permanent which means finding herself a best friendRose Tully is a worrier who feels like she doesn't uite fit in with the other girls in her neighborhood Her closest friend is Mr Duffy but he hasn't been himself since his dog died Rose may have to break a few of her m. I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this middle grade fiction novel both through my #BookRelays group and NetGalley I’ve been very excited about reading it ever since I read Barbara O’Connor’s book Wish I really enjoyed reading this story of friendship people’s abilities to grow in positive ways and the realization that people are multidimensional – no one is all good or all bad in real lifeWe learn all of these awesome lessons through the story of Mavis Jeeter Rose Tully Mr Duffy and Henry Mavis has moved many times in her life as her mother freuently changes jobs andor relationships When Mavis’ mom gets a new job as a housekeeper in the Tully household she and Mavis move into a small apartment over the family’s garage Mavis who has never had a best friend uickly informs Rose Tully that they will be best friends Rose who has been lonesome ever since her older sister went off to college is glad to have a new friend But it soon becomes clear that these two girls are very different from each otherRose is very reserved soft spoken and very reluctant to break any of the rules set by her rigid mother Mavis is of a free spirit who speaks her mind often without thinking through the conseuences When the two of them try to help lonely Mr Duffy the gatekeeper of the upscale community where they live by finding him a new dog to replace the beloved pet that passed away there are a number of rules that need to be brokenRose learns to relax a little bit and take risks Mavis learns that sometimes she needs to be patient in order to be a good best friend Mr Duffy and Henry an escaped greyhound from the local dog track also learn new lessons about trusting others and trying new thingsThe character development in this story is great Everyone learns something and becomes better for it by the end of the story I like that the characters are multidimensional For example Amanda is a bit of a snooty girl and somewhat of a nemesis in the story However she is kindhearted enough to give food to the stray dog and is generous enough to loan her bicycle to Mavis It concerns me a little bit that in order for Rose to prove her friendship to Mavis she feels pressured to break her mothers’ rules I know that kids often think rules are lame but Rose’s mother had her rules in order to keep Rose safe – especially the rules about staying away from the woods and the busy highway outside the housing development But this is a very real situation for middle grade readers as they are faced with this type of peer pressure all the time This might lead to a good opportunity to discuss with young readers whether someone should have to break rules in order to be friends with someoneThis is a terrific middle school read with an engaging story Anyone who has ever fallen in love with a stray animal will definitely be able to relate to this book This book will be released in August and would be a good addition to classroom libraries grades 4 and up

SUMMARY Wonderland

WonderlandOther's many rules to help Mr Duffy and find someone who really understands herHenry has run away from home but he craves kindness and comfort and doesn't know where to look for themWhen Mavis and Rose hatch a scheme to find Mr Duffy a new dog their lives and Henry's intersect and they all come to find friendship in places they never expected. E ARC from Edelweiss PlusMavis Jeeter and her mother have moved around a lot mainly because her mother is never happy with any of her jobs It's hard on Mavis who just really wants to stay in one place and make some friends When the two move to Alabama so her mother can be the housekeeper for the Tullys Mavis is superexcited Not only do they have a nice if small apartment as part of the job but there is a girl Rose just her own age There's plenty to do in the gated community including riding Rose's skateboard talking to the gatekeeper Mr Duffy and trying to corral a greyhound they find in the woods They also have to deal with Amanda who has an on again off again friendship with Rose and as usual Mavis' mother finds plenty to complain about with her job Mr Duffy is finding it hard to cope with his job after the death of his job and Rose worries about him Mavis is bound and determined that getting him a new dog will solve all of his problems The dog they find and for whom Amanda has been caring is from a local dog racetrack Wonderland When they bring the dog to Mr Duffy he says the dog must be returned but this actually ends up helping things work out for everyone in unexpected ways How long will Mavis be able to stay in her current situation before her mother decides it is time to move on Strengths This reminded me a lot of Constance Greene's A Girl Called Al but just in the plot line about Mr Duffy and it certainly ends in a MUCH happier way I loved seeing both sides of the economic divide people who live in gated communities and people who work for them Mavis is a force of nature and her optimism in the face of difficulties is refreshing Rose's shyness and difficulty in dealing with her overbearing mother is interesting as well It's fun to watch her break free Henry is a great dog and the way his future and Mr Duffy's become entwined is very realistic I was very glad at the end that Mavis' mother was able to adjust her outlook on life that doesn't happen often and it was refreshing to see Weaknesses I wish there had been a lot information about Wonderland and greyhound rescue operations Also I am having a LOT of trouble getting my mind around the fact that people hire people do do their household chores I know they still do but I just can't envision itWhat I really think I really liked this but I am debating if it might be too young for middle school The friend dynamics are a bit elementary Still I might be able to get this one checked out because of the dog but my 8th graders would definitely find it too young

This was a wonderfully cute and warm hearted read for both the intended younger audience as well as for any age across the lifespan From each uniue character to the Southern charm writing style it was an enjoyable and fun uick read Additionally along with the entertaining moments of the story there were also suitably emotional moments that come with some of the discoveries and lessons of growing up This book was not the story of one main character and was instead the story of many individual characters Mavis Rose Henry and Mr Duffy Each of these characters played such an important part within the story that it would not be the same with any one of them removedOverall a very enjoyable read and I will be looking for written by Barbara O’Connor in the future Thank you to Raincoast Books for sending me an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review
